Tell women they belong in the kitchen.
Rajshri Productions
Hum Saath Saath Hai legitimate had a line that went, “Jaha ghar ki ladies aur bachiyan hume apne haath se, pyaar se khaana khilaye, wahi ghar, ghar hota hai”. Yeah.
4.
The person you love must love you back, otherwise you are worthless.
Dharma Productions
Ayan from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil couldn’t understand the fact that the person he fell in love with didn’t love him back, and that’s an age-old Bollywood problem. Sometimes the people you love don’t feel the same way and it sucks, but there’s more to life and it gets better eventually.
5.

While Bollywood has seen many problematic male characters, the most recent being Kabir SinghSafeena from Ravine Boy being the super jealous, toxic girlfriend who resorted to beating another woman with a glass bottle wasn’t cool.

Kabir’s commitment issues have gone on for years and I think Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani This is where the whole toxic “I won’t be with you, but you can’t be with anyone else” boy attitude started with Naina’s “I can fix it with my love.”
8.
Not respecting the boundaries of women or anyone for that matter.
Yash Raj Movies
Raj of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is a solid example of it. He was stuck with Simran on the train and made her very uncomfortable. He also later let Simran believe they had slept together and played it off as a joke.
9.
You secretly love your best friend, even though you don’t know it yet.
Yash Raj Movies
Bollywood really, really strongly believes that a guy and a girl can never be friends and you have to end up falling in love with your best friend. Of course, the protagonist mainly accepts this love when his friend is about to marry a nice person.
Example : Hum Tum, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, Baaja Baaraat Group, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
ten.
Equate being gay with being spoiled.
Dharma Productions
Whereas Dostana tried to be a coming of age movie, the movie had an entire song called “Maa da laadla bigad gaya”, because a character was supposedly gay? Also, the one character who was actually gay was mocked and portrayed as a predator for some reason.
11.
Treating women like objects and manipulating them.
Dharma Productions/Via giphy.com
Kal Ho Naa Ho gave us a lot of nice characters but “6 din ladki in” was a horrible way to treat someone, especially if it was the person you were supposed to love.
12.
Handling your best friend is fine.
T-series
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety it seemed completely acceptable to manipulate your best friend “for his own good” to the point where Kartik Aaryan’s character hoped his best friend would cheat on his fiancé.
