1. Deepika Padukone
One of the highest paid actresses, Deepika Padukone knows her worth. According to reports, there have been several times when she turned down a movie due to the gender pay gap. She has consistently raised her voice against the unequal pay offered to women even after working like their male counterparts. A Times of India report even quoted her as saying, “I know my background and what I am worth. I don’t think I could live with the idea of knowing that I was part of a movie, had the same creative contribution or brought the same value to a movie, but I ‘ve been underpaid.”
2. Shahrukh Khan
One of the bankable stars Shah Rukh Khan supports gender equality and believes that people should be paid based on their merit and not based on their gender. Not only that, he has been an active supporter of equal pay for men and women. He was even the first actor to give first credit to his female leads in film and lead by example in the 2013 film, Chennai Express. In an interview with a daily, he reportedly said, “There should be no disparity. A male actor and a female actor should have the same fees – why is it different, I don’t know. But I would also add that no actor – male or female – should overestimate their performance. No individual – whether director or actor – should burden the film’s expenses by charging an amount that goes beyond the film’s opening weekend performance”
3. Priyanka Chopra
Even though Priyanka Chopra has become an international star, the actress has revealed that she has also faced the issue of salary disparity both in Bollywood and Hollywood. She said there was a huge pay gap between actors and actresses. Once she revealed to Instyle Magazine, “I feel it every year, especially when you’re doing movies with really great actors, whether it’s in India or America. If an actor makes $100, the conversation will start with max, like, 8 bucks. The gap is huge.” She believes that the moment audiences start watching films aimed at women, from that day on there will be equal pay.
4. Kangana Ranaut
“Queen” actress Kangana Ranaut believes there should be a fair distribution of pay and one should feel empowered enough to make their point. While launching the trailer for his movie “Panga,” Kangana said, “If you don’t feel empowered, no one can make you feel empowered. You must feel like an equal. God gave me a pancreas, a kidney, a heart and eyes. I am not inferior to others. If you don’t feel empowered, no court can make you feel empowered. Half the battle is lost when you feel unworthy.
5. Vidya Balan
Actress Vidya Balan admits there is a pay gap, but women have to fight on their own to close the gap. The actress is known to have given many hit films centered on women and had raised her voice for equal pay in society. According to reports, Vidya had said, “We have always been part of a male dominated society. But with movies and TV there seems to be a big change now and maybe it will be a male dominated society. by women.” She added, “There is a huge pay gap between men and women in Bollywood. But I’m sure over time this gap will narrow. We will definitely fight to close this gap.”
