Even though dowry has been illegal in India since 1961, it is still prevalent and actress Parineeti Chopra is shocked at how Indian families see it as a “gift”.
“Everyone knows dowry is illegal and immoral, but they practice it. What angers me is that people have renamed it ‘gift’ to make it sound good. Dowry just means you put a price on the girl and you buy her.
“We call ourselves modern but then what do we do? To look superior, we ask for money and luxurious things from the girls’ families. This is the unfortunate scenario of our country,” Parineeti said, while while promoting his upcoming movie “Jabariya Jodi”. “.
A direct result of the dowry threat is another crime – the practice of abducting eligible bachelors and forcing them to marry daughters, mostly at gunpoint. This crime, known as “pakadwa vivah” (forced marriage), has plagued Bihar for years. Often, such a forced marriage occurs because the family of the groom in question demands a large dowry.
“Jabariya Jodi” is a light drama centered around the concept of “pakadwa vivah”.
“Although ‘pakadwa vivah’ is an anti-dowry practice, it is wrong. You cannot just kidnap someone and force them to marry. However, if there is no demand for dowry, there will be no ‘pakdwa vivah.’ I ask people to stop putting a price tag on girls’ lives,” Parineeti said.
Apart from “Jabariya Jodi”, Parineeti has two major films in her kitty. She will be seen in Saina Nehwal’s biopic and Hindi remake of ‘The Girl On The Train’.
Speaking about Saina’s biopic, Parineeti said it was one of her toughest roles to date.
“It’s really difficult to play someone who is respected around the world. I know there will be comparisons, and I’m prepared for that. I want to do justice by portraying Saina because she has achieved a lot things in his life. I want everyone to feel proud,” she said, adding, “For this role, I had to step out of my comfort zone. Nobody would have thought that I would play a sportswoman in my life, but here I am. The challenges are many. I hope I conquer them all,” added Parineeti.
