Sean Penn and Ben Stiller have been officially and permanently banned from entering Russia as both actors were personally sanctioned by the Russian Foreign Ministry for their support of Ukraine during the current invasion.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Penn and Stiller have been permanently banned from entering Russia, along with 23 other “US Congressmen, senior government officials, business and pundits, and cultural figures.” Russia’s Foreign Ministry made the announcement on Monday in response to what it calls “the G. Biden administration’s ever-increasing personal sanctions against Russian citizens.”
“The hostile actions of the US authorities, which continue to follow a Russophobic path, destroying bilateral relations and escalating the confrontation between Russia and the United States, will continue to be resolutely repelled,” a statement said. “Although this may have more to do with Russia invading Ukraine right now and not with America’s ‘Russophobic race’ which is ‘destroying bilateral relations’ between the two countries. Just a thought.”
Ben Stiller and Sean Penn joined Rob Reiner and Morgan Freeman, both sanctioned in May, on Russia’s growing ban list that also includes President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Attorney General Merrick Garland and d other politicians, journalists, intelligence officers and professors. During his time in the war-torn country, Penn witnessed the start of the invasion of Ukraine, when he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the day before the siege by Russian troops.
He had traveled to Ukraine for a documentary centered on the ongoing invasion. The actor has always been very vocal about his views on politics. In February, he released the following statement: “Already a brutal mistake of lives taken and hearts broken, and if he does not relent, I believe Mr. Putin will have made a most horrific mistake for all of humanity. President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people have become a historical symbol of courage and principle. Ukraine is the tip of the spear of the democratic embrace of dreams. If we allow him to fight alone, our soul as America is lost.”
Sean Penn is the founder of the non-profit organization CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort), which currently helps Ukrainian refugees living in Poland.
