The latest release from Ashutosh Gowariker and Bhushan Kumar Junior Tools based in the backdrop of Snooker, traces the real-life story of director Mridul, unraveling the emotional story of his childhood bond with his father, portrayed by Varun Buddhadev and late veteran actor Rajiv Kapoor respectively.
Toolsidas Junior retraces the real life story of director Mridul
Located in Kolkata, Junior Tools features the story of a Snooker champion played by Rajiv Kapoor who succumbs to alcohol, which prevents him from winning the trophy. Determined to shine his family name on the winners’ board, his son, Toolsidas Junior undertakes special coaching under former Indian champion played by Sanjay Dutt to win the trophy at the snooker championship.
Basing the story on his own life, writer and director Mridul presented Junior Tools as an ode to his father and had wished to organize a special screening of the film for his real father and Rajiv Kapoor. However, as fate would have it, his father and Rajiv Kapoor lost their lives in the same year, before the film was released.
Director Mridul shares, “Billiards has been an essential part of my life, especially because of the memories it has with my father. Toolsidas Junior depicts one of the most cherished parts of my life. I fought to bring glory to my father at the time, and I wanted to do the same by making Toolsidas Junior.
When the film was almost ready, I had decided to organize a special preview of the film for my father with Rajiv Kapoor sir, because he plays the character of my father on the screen. Sadly, Mr. Rajiv passed away in February last year, and soon after, even my father passed away. However, they both saw the final cut individually before leaving us. I’m glad both of their memories live on forever in the form of Toolsidas Junior.”
Ashutosh Gowariker says, “When Mridul came to me with the script, I didn’t know it was his story, I just felt it was a movie I wanted to make. The raw, relatable emotions of the Midi’s story found a place in my heart. and when i learned that it was Mridul’s own journey, i could understand why honesty and heart were so pure. We often say that cinema is the reflection of society, Junior Tools definitely reflects reality in the most appealing way.”
Junior ToolsReleased on Netflix today, May 23 marks Rajiv Kapoor’s final posthumous appearance following his death in February 2021.
Taking the audience through the life of a boy and his immense love for his father in the context of sport, Junior Tools stars the late actor Rajiv Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Varun Buddhadev in the lead roles.
Gulshan Kumar & T-Series present a Toolsidas Junior from Ashutosh Gowariker Productions. Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Ashutosh Gowariker and Sunita Gowariker, the film written and directed by Mridul began streaming on Netflix on May 23, 2022.
