Indians are guilty of relishing an over-the-top and over-the-top form of entertainment. Whether it’s jumping unscathed from a burning building or battling a vicious tiger, if it’s on a movie screen, it doesn’t make sense.
It’s no different when it comes to watching actors play cross-dressing characters. Even though it is criminally and mind-numbing, audiences will consume it without thinking for even a second. From outrageously sexist films featuring Govinda in a girly tennis outfit and ponytails to Ranbir Kapoor mixing it up by cross-dressing in a commercial, we highlight some of the worst cross-dressing characters Bollywood is guilty of creating .
1. The “Humshakals” trio

Having recently come to terms with the scathing criticism her drag looks received in Humshakals, Saif Ali Khan told Kusha Kapila in a recent interaction that it was quite embarrassing. Not only did he wear a bathing suit and a bad wig, but his co-stars Ram Kapoor and Riteish Deshmuskh also cross-dressed in the film. Needless to say, there was nothing tasteful about these appearances.
2. Ajay Devgn and his gang in “Golmaal Returns”

Expectations for the sequel skyrocketed understandably when Golmaal did well at the box office. However, when Tusshar Kapoor’s mute character dressed up in a kimono outfit with co-stars Ajay Devgn, Shreyas Talpade and Arshad Warsi showcasing huge fake boobs, Returns from Golmaal has become nothing but a gnashing of teeth.
3. Akshay Kumar in “Laxmi”

4. Riteish Deshmukh in ‘Apna Sapna Money Money’

Ritesh Deshmukh has always been loved for his comedic timing and talent. But the actor has had his share of grumpy roles in movies like Apna Sapna Silver Silver. Riteish plays a con man who disguises and tricks people in the film.
5. Sharman Joshi and Sahil Khan in “Style”

Although Style is one of the reasons Sharman Joshi rose to fame, the movie had its cringe-worthy moments that were offensive and sexist. For example, lead actors Sharman and Sahil Khan posing as women to live in a women’s hostel. Crude impersonation involving skimpy clothing, high-pitched voices, and being overtly sexual were some of the things these cross-dressing characters got wrong.
